george carlin was an absolute legend. the bit in that clip that struck me the most was the wilfully ignorant bit. everywhere you look there are human sheep, and it makes me despair. just back from the blanchardstown shopping centre it’s herds of dull, vacant eyed consumers. going to go and listen to some more carlin, and maybe some bill hicks as well. at least that way it’s not quite as depressing

  2. porridge says:

we are a nation of sheeple. no wonder nasa keep looking for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, cos there’s fuck all down here

  3. killemall says:

It’s amazing how many people still dismiss this kind of thinking as a ‘conspiracy theory’, Ireland is, alas, the perfect example. But we will change our thinking? Will we fuck. Watch Bertie, Cowan, Lowry, Healy fucking Rae & the rest of the cunts get reelected next time, again. May they all die screaming. I really mean that.

  4. sheepshagger says:

The larger the mob/group of people the more predictable
    it’s behaviour. (Present company excepted)
Consumerism is just a convenient way of converting and
condensing the effort of the grex venalium into wealth.

  5. Loco Lobo says:

If this clip was played on TV and radio before every election it might… nah! Fuck it, it won’t change a single mind anyway.

  6. Crank says:

That’s brilliant. What is that from Twenty? What’s the show called?

  7. Icarus says:

Only the small secrets need to be protected. The big ones are kept secret by public incredulity. Fact.

  8. Senor Dingdong says:

    Spot on as usual.

Try to get your hands on a series called The century of the self by Adam Curtis if you’re interested in that sheepshagger.

It goes through the rise of the use of psychoanalysis to control large groups of people. It’s fascinating stuff.

  9. fill3rup says:

Carlin was a masterful comedian, but that piece is perfectly executed..and in fact when you listen to it the first time its funny, but on repeated viewings you pic up the dread, and exasperation and futility in his voice, like he has been trying to wake people up his whole career and he knew it was coming to and end so basically summed up all his political routines in 3 minutes of brilliance… Like Hicks,he is sadlt missed

  10. Ricky says:

    Replace with Irish

    Replace Wanker with Banker

  11. sheepshagger says:

    Gracias Senor.

Bill Hicks had the right idea.

Perhaps if Ireland’s money worries were a bit more serious
we might have political change but as long as most of the
people have disposable income at the end of each week/month
    nothing will happen.

Shopping is the valium of the masses.

  12. sheepshagger says:

Recently the BBC did a series on the American Dream what
caught my attention was Pete Seeger’s song – the one from
Weeds. Little Houses I think it’s called

A perfect commentary on consumerism and conformity which
might have been what brought him to the attention of
The House Committee on un-American Activity.

  13. sheepshagger says:

Twenty you’ve struck a chord here.
Please forgive the poor presentation but I’m using
    another’s ‘puter.

Is it any wonder society is so fucking sick when millions
try to bring colour to their dull lives by apeing ‘celebrities’
and sucking up every trivial detail of the lives of rich nobodies.

    L.S.D. in the water now!!!!!

  14. Des says:

    twenty, long time reader,
is this comparison not a bit over the top? we are not at the mercy to big business as much as other countries.
ireland is a small island, something always ignored in the media for a specific reason.
take for instance, the water company (american owned) tried to privitise the water in bolivia.
people took to the streets and changed what looked like certain victory for the corporation.

we can change things. hopefully the current situation will bring about a new identity. one were we are awake.

  15. Twenty Major says:

Just seemed appropriate, Des. Is anything really going to change?

We need a whole new political class.

Crank – not sure which show it’s from.

  16. sheepshagger says:

Des that bit about Bolivia illustrates the danger of
IMF involvement in countries stuck for a bob or two.

Did not the American company try to charge the poor people
for the water that they collected from their roof?
Peter Sutherland is the architect of ‘globalisation’ and in the GATT
talks poorer countries were actually locked out of side talks
that dealt with individual sectors while the interests of bigger
producing countries could carve out deals allowing them to retain
import tariffs whilst forcing poorer countries to open up their
markets. No wonder there were riots in Seattle.

That is how Sutherland earned his invite to Bohemian Grove and
    The Bilderberg shindigs.

    The game’s fixed.

  17. Brendan says:

So twenty, does this mean you are starting a Tea Party?

  18. GLUAISTEAN says:

THE REAL SHEEP ARE THE LAZY GOBSHITES WHO BUY INTO THE RANTING OF A TIRED OLD MAN WHEN HE OFFERS THEM AN EXCUSE AND SCAPEGOATS FOR THEIR OWN LAZINESS AND INABILITY TO GET ON IN LIFE.
INSTEAD OF ALL THE WHINING DID YOU LOT EVER ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES A BIT OF EFFORT,APPLICATION AND PHYSICAL WORK?
AH WELL – i HAVE THE FEELING I AM CASTING PEARLS BEFORE SWINE…AND THE SAD PART IS THAT YOUR REACTION TO THIS WILL BE THE UUAL KNEE-JERK CHORUS OF DENIAL AND BULLSHIT.

YOU MAY HAVE BEEN BORN TO THE YOKE…BUT YOU MAKE AN ACTIVE CHOICE TO CONTINUE TO ACCEPT IT.

  19. Crank says:

It’s alright, I found it Twenty:

  20. Crank says:

Well gluey, when you’ve finished shouting, some of us have been fighting The Man for many, many years, fighting for probity in high office, higher standards from those in receipt of our taxes, especially those within our public service. Some of us have paid a real and very high price for our ideals but we continue to fight.

This is not the forum for revelations but don’t you dare paint all of us with the same brush.

And fix your caps lock. The joke is old.

  21. itchybollix says:

it’s coming around. i think. the phoenix magazine editorial has called for a rejection of the budget by fg, independents, dissedent ff fuckfucks to prevent the red white and blue cock getting shoved up our hole.

I’m asking the greens to read the editorial and find a reason to disagree voting against this budget

    bring down the government

or as the dude in malahide chipper said, with an entrance that elvis would be proud of

    BATTER BURGER AND CHIPS PLEASE!

  22. itchybollix says:

    seems like a plan.

  23. Crank says:

It is amazing that every single renowned economist, both here and abroad, thinks the bailout is a recipe for disaster, yet Cowen and Co. insist it’s the best deal for Ireland. I want Fianna Fail to stand in the Dail and tell me that they will sacrifice their pensions and their wages if it turns out they’re wrong.

They also have to come to my house and bring me batter burger and chips (itchy, you bastard. Now I’m fucking starving!)

  24. itchybollix says:

i went for a half bag of chips and a spice burger.

    http://i51.tinypic.com/2mnnptc.jpg

i was never a batterd sausage man. my brother now. he’s a different story. he’s been going out with the same battered sausage now for the best part of twenty years. a south american battered sausage at that. it was far from a south american battered sausage he was brought up near.

this is the dogs bollix. *burp

  25. Crank says:

It’s no wonder your keyboard is knackered.

  26. wolfhound says:

Just a pity that the clip has been hijacked by the rightwing.

  27. Beyond The Pale says:

  29. itchybollix says:

just a couple of paragraphs from a 2 page editorial in the phoenix mag about the budget.

This economix death warrant planned by the government now faces the elected members of the Oireactas who must debate and hopefully reject the budget next week in what is, effectively, a pre-condition of the so-called “bail-out”. It may be the most important Dail session since the Treaty debates 90 years ago. But while some in the media, many moderate economists and much of the public have excoriated the agreement, the main opposition party, FG, as well as highly vocal FF dissidents and various Independents are prevaricating about whether or not to oppose the budget.

The budget must be voted down for two very simple reasons. Firstly because it will then provide the only opportunity that is possible to renogotiate the iniquitous conditions of this “bail-out”. Secondly, it will rid the country of an administration that is patently incapbale of negotiating a fair, sensible and workable solution to a temporary problem, the roots of which may be Irish but the blame for which must be accepted partly by our European “partners.

Over the next couiple of pages he drills down in the financials which show that we have been completely and utterly fucked over by the banks and FF just saying yes to everything they want. IMF deal is actually quite fair, ecb – which is the bulk of tha cash is mafia loanshark stuff.

i advise to buy the mag this week, scan the editorial and send it to everyone you know, get them to inundate FF/FG/Lab TDs with it to lobby them to reject the budget and bring down the government.

    It’s up to FG.

The National last night at the olympia? Yawn. half a bag of chips and a spiceburger when I got home? excellent.

What state is the city centre in Itchy, ill be up tomorrow for Arcade Fire, would you recommend wearing walking boots and thick socks?

  31. itchybollix says:

It’s in shit filler. As i said to mozart last night as we were slipping and sliding around the street near trinity college “if this was new york the paths would be cleared”. pretty fucking disgraceful but I expect nothing less from this tin-pot shithole of a country and it’s administration of basic public services.

runners, boots, wellies and small steps will see you ok. arcade fire always put on a good show, have a good time.

  32. fill3rup says:

If it was anyone else and i hadnt paid for the hotel,i would be giving it a miss, but since i saw their first show in ireland (yes the electric picnic one that everyone says they were at) ive wanted to see them again and apparently this current show isd fairly spectacular..

  33. itchybollix says:

i saw them at the olympia and in the tent thing in the phoenix park. they are excellent. they also like fugazi which is always a good thing
their last album ..i need to work on it maybe.

still listening to this record; it’s not moving anywhere….may give the new arcade fire a spin this afternoon..pretty sure that the mad fucker terry gilliam is involved in the arcade fire tour set-up

OH “God Bless Iceland” is great. It was on rte2 a while back, wonder who put it on.

Very illuminating considering how IReland has tanked. Follows protestors and police in the aftermath of the financial catastrophe there.

    George Carlin, what a legend.

You can see The Century of the Self for free on Google Videos: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6718420906413643126#

Eye opening stuff. This is the kind of information people need to be having themselves a look at and spreading around.

I also recommend ‘The Shock Doctrine’ by Naomi Klein and ‘Web of Debt’ by Ellen Brown and if you think we in the west are free from propaganda, I’d recommend you read anything by Noam Chomsky.

If you are curious about the mentality of the people in power you can also download ‘Propaganda’ by Edward Bernays.

(Bernays was the father of what we now call ‘PR’, he changed the term from Propaganda to PR after WW2, when the public learned how Nazi Germany had used it to manipulate mass opinion and became rightfully outraged. The fact that few know about this shows how good he was. ) All of these are also available as a torrent.

If more people take the time to learn the truth, we could have a very different world.
