Silver screen machine

You know, I can’t remember the last time I watched a film and thought ‘Man, that was damn good’.

Does anyone know what it was?

All I know is it didn’t have have Al Pacino in it, wasn’t directed by that cunt Guy Ritchie and there was no sign of that woman who looks like a man who looks like a man who looks like a woman. You know the one.

The first time I was really wowwed by a film was the Usual Suspects. Kevin Spacey’s ‘Verbal Kint’ blew me away as did the storyline.

Most recently it was Sexy Beast, with Ben Kingsley as the biggest cunt you ever met. You really really end up hating this lad and his chrome dome.

    “The Lives of Others”

I was just going to mention that. Great film. Also the French film “Tell No One”, and the Japanese film “Tokyo Story” is one of the best films I’ve seen in a while.

  5. Loco Lobo says:

I remember that film, especially the surprise ending that didn’t suprize. Great.

Avatar = shite story, but if you’re high the visuals are amazing.

  12. Holemaster says:

Close Encounters was the first film I saw in the Cinema. I was awe struck. I still play with my mashed potato today.

  16. The Cap'n says:

HM were you sitting in the front row of the cinema when the REALLY big spaceship comes over the top of the mountain?

Lost a bird over that one as we were playing tonsil tennis at the time and I was keeping one eye on the film and I more or less dropped her on the floor.

    Still a great scene though.

  17. Medbh says:

Twenty, you really liked “Ghost Dog” from your xmas-time viewing, remember?

  18. Holemaster says:

I was too young for that carry on.

God I hate that world cup pringles ad. Homogenised crap.

  19. Anne says:

Good news for the ladies. Its only a matter of weeks between the end of the World Cup and the start of the new season.

And then there’s the European Championship qualifying rounds to look foward to. And all te transfer activity between now and the start of the season.

    Grand so.

Yes, Avatar. And Men Who Stare At Goats. But haven’t seen much else of late.

  27. Holemaster says:

I thought avatar was awful. Loads of nods to 9/11 and Afghanistan. Reversed innuendo.

  28. District 9 was at least good value for money. Here’s a topical clip from it:

  29. Robert says:

Nothing has wowed me recently, but Syriana was good, as was Good Night and Good Luck, and Capote.

  30. Laurence says:

The only film that wowed me recently was The Lives Of Others.

For others, as I told FMC last week…
    The Spirit of the Beehive.
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
    Two Lane Blacktop.

  31. Twenty Major says:

Twenty, you really liked “Ghost Dog” from your xmas-time viewing, remember?

Yeah, I love that. 6 months ago though. And I can’t think of anything new that’s made me sit up.

The French one, Prophet, was pretty good but a bit too long.

  32. Anne says:

That was sick OTD. You call that a good film!

  33. Janeymac says:

    A Prophet was good.

  34. Holemaster says:

    Muppets II

  35. Robert says:

HM, Muppets II was animal……….. as are you

  36. johnnypiles says:

A Prophet indeed,Let The Right One In,Pans Labryinth,Garage,Adam and Paul…Ben Stiller’s Greenberg was awful, not one decent person in the film, full of horrible people..

  37. One Man and His Dog says:

I did see a film with a whole lot of famous people in it, it had a great story line, it had great action in it, and as well as all that it was the best film I ever saw.

  38. bren says:

    I liked Shutter Island

  39. SuperGrover says:

Charlie Kaufman (writer of Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine..) made his directorial debut last year with Synecdoche, New York.

It’s amazing stuff, brilliantly conceived, written, directed and acted (if you can Handle Philip Seymour Hoffman crying quite a bit. I can. He’s the bizzo).

Strangely quiet cinema release for such a big and brilliant film.

Watch this one. Not on a laptop while also watching the telly / reading blogs / wanking, but proper sit down and watch it style.

    Anyway. Enough. Watch this.

  40. SuperGrover says:

And, as others have pointed out, The Lives of Others is one of the best films in years.

It’s solid as a rock. Brilliant. Perfectly weighted.

  41. divneymathers says:

Moon looks good but I haven’t seen it yet.

  42. SuperGrover says:

It’ll be on again tonight. Unless it’s cloudy.

  43. Heywood Jablome says:

Renee Russo? Very masculine looking burd alright…

  44. Twenty Major says:

    Moon isn’t bad, in fairness

  45. Grimy Miner says:

    Jamie Lee Curtis, right?

  46. Grimy Miner says:

Appropos Jamie Lee Curtis – she is what we called a LRB ( Low Resolution Babe ).
From a distance, in low resolution, she looked good, but up close?
    Not with yours

  47. Heywood Jablome says:

Great rack on JLC though, in fairness…

  48. wordhole says:

Let the Right One In, Moon and Kick Ass were all very good…
Liked district 9 and the Secret of Kells too… but none of them were mindblowing.

If you haven’t watched it, try ‘Touching the Void’ great story… not a new one though

  49. sakimoto says:

I thuoght the Hurt Locker was watchable on a hungover Sunday, no way it deserved all those oscars though. I haven’t seen any new films in the last while that made me think twice about them. The Lives of Others as several have stated is an excellent film, well worth a watch. It’s hard to beat Bad Boy Bubby for sheer weirdness, great film though.

  50. on the dry says:

    a very yes ann

  51. boscospants says:

i agree with bren shutter island, just finished the book so dont know if the film is any good. but as i tell people all the time the book is always better than any film.

  52. fuzzix says:

Kick Ass is fucking dirt, avoid if possible. District 9 and Moon were pretty good. Haven’t caught Let The Right One In yet…

  53. SAm Crea says:

I watched about an hour of the lives of others (it was a gift) and just got completely bored with it and turned it off… No Country for old men was the last film that blew me away and men who stare at goats didnt make it past 30 minutes…

New Predator film should be a laugh..

  54. Bray-Root says:

“The book is always better than the film”
    BULLSHIT
Are you trying to tell me that the book versions of the shawshank redemption and the shining are better than the movie versions?

  55. Was it “In Bruges”…? ‘Cos that was the last one that I watched and said “fuck me ragged, that was an ace film. Even that cunt Twenty would have liked that film. Even if it is full of fucking Irish people. And Belgians.”

    DK

  56. Twenty Major says:

I don’t think Irish people like that film as much as non-Irish.
