Well worth a read in the Independent. The underlying theme suggests that Callely has been claiming expenses as if he were living in Cork when he’s been in Dublin most of the time. How true that is, I can’t say, but his own remarks on the situation don’t exactly make things clear.
He’s got a bit of history, of course. He resigned a cabinet post in 2005 after it was revealed he’d had his house painted for free. To reward him for falling on his sword, while others got away with much, much worse, Bertie Ahern (who got away with much, much worse) appointed him to the cash cow that is the Seanad. And here we are.
The culture of expenses fiddling is part and parcel of politics, not just Irish as recent events in the UK have shown. However, there is never any will to change things properly. TDs are still allowed a certain amount of unvouched expenses and when the system is such that we’re not sure if we’re being defrauded or not then it’s obvious that some people will take advantage of that.
Until somebody starts examining expenses properly and then prosecutes those who have defrauded the Irish people nothing is going to change. The occasional high profile resignation is hardly a deterrent.

Just for the record. A few years ago, a town councillor in Bray took a bribe of an apartment (in a relatives name) in exchange for voting in favour of planning for the Bray pier redevelopment. That is a fact.
Also, a member of Dublin City Council took a huge bribe from a very well known building contractor for a contract which netted the company several hundred million over a number of years. That is also a fact.
