Times change

Interesting to read about bishop Eamon Casey in the Irish Times today. As we reel from one church obscured sexual abuse scandal to another, it’s worth remembering the reaction in 1992 when it was revealed he’d fathered a child with Annie Murphy.

The scandal meant he had to resign and he subsequently left the country. A priest, having sex, with a woman? The outrage, the disgust, the finger pointing. It was the worst thing the good catholics of Ireland could contemplate. Casey was denounced for a while, then their attentions turned to Annie Murphy, a temptress, a harlot, a loose woman. Her treatment on the Late, Late Show was utterly shameful, ganged up on by psuedo-avuncular Gaybo and condemned from the audience by Casey’s cronies. A low point in Irish broadcasting.

And over what? A man, living an unnatural life of celibacy, having sex with a woman. A child being born. What sick perversion was this?

Fast forward less than twenty years. Child abusers are still protected by the church, they take no responsiblity, choose to protect the insitution above the victims, yet an adult who had sex with another adult and had a child together was dealt with like a criminal, with ruthless efficiency. The woman did nothing wrong but fall in love with a person she shouldn’t have (I know, it hardly ever happens) and she was subjected to a public vilification that few of the church’s bad apples, from abusers to masters of the cover-up, have been.

Times change, eh?

And still, like zombies they walk to mass every Sunday making sure to be seen to be pious and upstanding amongst their own deluded kind.

Bishops having sex / fathering children = prohibited by the Vatican (it threatens enforced celibacy rules)…
Bishops protecting paedophile priests from the law at all costs = Vatican policy…
Women = root of all evil (a given)….
    QED
Priests raping and abusing children is a good thing because it lets off a bit of steam, it can be hidden using clerical authority over victims, and it doesn’t challenge church rules on what is ‘normal’ the way consensual sexual relations between adults does.

  3. maggot says:

They need to get their act together about sex. They genuinely think kiddy fiddling is less sinful than consensual sex. Mind you Casey was at least with a woman and as they had a child it meant there was no birth control. He got Ecuador – if it had been a man he would have been sent to Larne.

  4. Dave says:

At least Casey didn’t use condoms. The horror!

  5. Ah, but his did pay Annie Murphy off with 200 grand of the church’s money over 18 years.

Whereas paying off an alterboy usually involves a bag of bullseyes and a plenary indulgence scrawled quickly onto the back of his Whizzer & Chips.

  6. Twenty Major says:

He screwed her and them. What a guy!

Can Casey stand for President ?

  8. Holemaster says:

No but she can kneel for him.

  9. The Cap'n says:

Personally I can’t wait to hear what the next septuagenarian virgin priest has to say about human sexuality.

Who knew? And why did they keep these entertaining theories to themselves all this time?

Beer- check. Peanuts, roast and salted- check. Comfy chair- check.

We are cleared for take off into the furthest reaches of the human psychology …. whooshhhhhhh

  10. Mully says:

    So, Len … How’s the son ?

The SON OF GOD of COURSE!

  11. Holemaster says:

    Heh.

  12. maggot says:

Education is the answer – so we should all proposition appropriately – Gayers and women should offer their blessings to priests and lezzers and blokes to nuns.

  13. The Cap'n says:

Strange how the Catlicker Church goes on about gays while trying to ignore the fact that in the US AIDs related fatalities are four times higher than the average AIDs related fatalities in the general population.

Either a lot of US catholic priests held a bit of personal info about themselves back on the ‘Got a Vocation?’ form or they are going around jabbing dirty heroin needles in each other.

Heh- one of the biggest gay organisations in the world hates fags. More peanuts, more beer required.

  14. He was a bit slow though, wasn’t he? Let’s face it, anybody who swallowed that whole ‘immaculate conception’ bollocks once would have been duty-bound to fall for it again.

  15. plop says:

Gaybo….Anyone else hear the rumours of him hangin around the Phoenix Park? Heard he’d a couple of Gardaí warnings!!!

  16. plop says:

Step away from the Rent Boy Gaybo….Oh Fuck….it’s…… Gaybo.

Times Change – they need to change a lot more. It’s embarassing it’s only 18 years ago that the country was so harmless. At least the mask is off now, but it will take another while before people look into those dark eyes and finally turn away in horror.

  18. Icarus says:

Can Casey stand for President ?

Peter Robinson can. His calander just opened up.

    BWAHAHAHAHA

Heard about bout d’Gaybo craic also. He must have the same friend as a certain FF boyoh, who was asked to move-on(twice)on the same night, Mr Stagg got himself lagged!!!

  21. Scratcher says:

Keep stoking the fire Twenty, there is plenty left of coal left. The RCC will do ANYTHING to make this whole debacle go away, it is up to us, the Irish People to keep prodding and probing into their shameful past. At some stage they will be held accountable for their actions and denial of the facts that have been laid before them. In the states the RCC wanted limited damages for their liability in a court of law, the judge threw them out, pity we don’t have the same division of law and religion in Ireland. My rant is over..

  22. Yippee says:

It’s the old reliable Madonna/Whore complex, women that actually admit to having sex are hussies, at the very least.
I remember Annie Murphy being treated like shite on the Late Late, and no one spoke up for her, even when Gaybo said he hoped the son would be at least half the man his father was!

This is the same father who was thrown out of the Rotunda Hospital (a protestant institution) by one of the Sisters, for shouting and roaring at Annie Murphy, when she refused to agree to give her new born son up for adoption!
The more things change, the more they stay the same, just the faces of the victims are different.

  23. Damien says:

The way Gaybo treated Annie Murphy was a disgrace, the pumped up pompous Prick! It’ll catch up with the Cunt one day, and if he is taking it up the jacksey in the Pheonix park, I hope he gets lagged.

  24. Ned says:

Casey was a nasty piece of work.

Have none of you ever read the Ferns Report regarding the proposal for Michael Ledwith, of Maynooth Seminary, to be a bishop?

Mind you, what came out then, and before that, when he fled the country, left me totally underwhelmed with surprise.

He had been a prize stinker for a very long time – long before he ever met Mrs Murphy.

  25. razzer says:

i love watching the footage from ’79 in the park – micheal cleary and casey working the crowd like rock stars in preparation for jp to take the stage. we truely are a nation of spas..

  26. ATM says:

Thanks for not painting me as a harlot but perhaps it is in the mix of colors.I must say I have learned my Irish grandfathers saying very well “If you pick fight with life, life will you up.” Damn right and in the end I am better for it. Life goes on and that incident seems so far away…
