Government announces further job losses

The Government has today approved a ban on a range of products sold in head shops. The ban will take another three months to enforce however, as it requires EU approval. The Government says the move – under the Misuse of Drugs Act – will mean head shops will not be able to sell the so-called ‘legal highs’ from Junesource.

So, what else do Head Shops sell apart from ‘legal highs’? I’ve never been in one, preferring my highs to be more on the illegal side (they seem better that way), but would I be right to assume they sell rizlas and bongs and packets of roaches and stuff like that?

Hardly the kind of product that requires a Head Shop ever 500 yards like there is now. Welcome to the scratcher, Head Shop workers.

And well done Joe Duffy for putting people out of business. You must be awful proud, you Ballymun bollocks.

Without a doubt this is government tapping into ignorant, populist rage in an effort to boost popular support. Once again, reasoned evidence goes out the door in favor of the type legislation that appeals to Concerned Cunting Mothers of Ireland and the hoards of rosacea-afflicted Catholic boggers.

This country needs a good nuclear bombing.

  2. Twenty Major says:

It is properly mentall all right. Funny how quick they can act over stuff like this while other things are ignored/drag on for years.

  3. Drunk Kitteh says:

Of course this will never be reversed by opposition parties as they also would never do something that could in any hurt them politically.

So here we have pure populism over logic and reason, surely this is just more evidence that the current system a 100% failure?

Anyway, the drug dealers will be fucking delighted.

Thank you Joe Duffy ! I believe that this sad news is a chink of light in the gloom. Holyhead has a need for a head shop, more than 40% are empty, and then the retail empire might expand across the water to Armagh?

I have the inkling of a brand too.. Big J Duffy’s Head Shop.

    hmmmmm

  8. itchybollix says:

This is just a distraction for the masses. Even if this rotten group is still in power in 3 months and pushes it through I’d be positive that head shop owners – one of whom is a judge allegedly? – my dad said that a judge owned one but he could be wrong – will appeal it.

this crowd are a fucking knee-jerk bunch of cunting fucks. It’s embarrassing to be irish. I hope cowen, coughlan, ahern, and all their scummy ff fucks choke. between fucking archaic blasphemy bullshit and the church now begging off they people they fucked, literally, the banks just laughing their fucking heads off at us all,,,this country is a fucking embarrassing shithole.

I’ve never been in head shop but I’m going to make sure I visit one now.

Is Joe Duffy ever going to crusade against the massive middle class prescription drugs problem? What a cunt.

  9. Caring maggot says:

Itchy – you need to seek help with this anger, it will destroy you!

  10. noddy says:

Itchy. When you put the demented priority list of this country in those terms. The shit in the HShops in’t half strong enough to deflect reality.

  11. Holemaster says:

Itchy, the Judge was owner of the premises and had no idea who rented it. Someone looked after the place on his behalf. I’m sure Independent Newspapers had plenty of misleading stories about it though.

My friend’s parents own apartments in England. There was brothels operating in a few of them. They had no fucking idea until the police called them.

  12. itchybollix says:

it shows what a fucking pathetic shithole of a country we live in when a cunt like joe duffy influences national policy. banana republics are laughing at us.

    anger soothes my ailment

  13. itchybollix says:

ok HM. i withdraw my remark. apologies to the judge. I’d love to give joe duffy a wedgie. notice how he shut his gob when the arsonists hit town? what a spineless cunt.

  14. Holemaster says:

I’d say the judge doesn’t a give a fuck. They rarely do. Most are mad as brushes. It’s like doing the Adrian Kennedy phone show except you hand out jail time.

  15. itchybollix says:

the judges are a bit odd most of the time; they’re like a doddery relative.

The place next door to me was burgled last week. The cops knocked on my door, looked around. I didn’t invite them in because they’re an easily offended bunch. Taste in art on my wall and all that.

  19. Joanne says:

I think we all know that many if not most of these head shops are fronts. I’ve personally been offered or witnessed people be offered proper drugs in two head shops in town. What about the one in Capel Street with half a million euro stashed in the safe? I doubt that cash was from the sales of “spice”!

I don’t want to sound like a killjoy….I freely admit i’ve used recreational drugs in the past…but these “legal highs” are just as dangerous as the real thing can potentially be. They’re not tested for safety because they just slap a sticker on the packet saying ‘not for human consumption’. As soon as one legal high is banned, they quickly produce an almost identical one with a slight variation in the formula to get round the ban (as happened with the BZP derivatives).

And of course there’s the fact that the stuff they sell is an outrageous rip off that either doesn’t work at all, or gives you major paranoia for a few days.

  20. shly dog says:

^ people don’t spend half a million euro on drugs that don’t work at all.
headshops were turning over a profit of 400% on some of their products. why would they bother selling illegal drugs too?

there’s no doubt that most of their products have safety issues, but what doesn’t? driving? fatty foods? cigarettes? cutting fruit? do we want to ban these things? no, we use accurate education, and/or age restrictions and health warnings.

no worries, sure the users can just go back to buying nice safe untaxable street drugs cut up with baby laxatives and sawdust from criminals. great improvement.

this is such a lost opportunity for health warnings, taxes, education, age restriction, regulation, etc.

if they’d been left open a while longer the black market might’ve collapsed, then the government could have swept in and taken over the industry, but no, let’s ban them outright and send the children back to the streets. sterling work as usual.

  21. Crank says:

Mick came home most nights high on legal highs purchased in Capel Street. He usually greeted his family by giving his wife a few slaps in the mouth, often kicking her down the stairs in front of the children if he thought she needed reassurance.

The fact that his legal highs came from Slattery’s rather than a Head Shop didn’t worry anyone. Except the wife and kids.

So the government lowered the tax on booze and fought to quash any lowering of the drink driving limit.

But Mick never thanked them. Mick didn’t give a fuck.

  22. The banning of head shops is just what the street dealers want, they’ve been losing thousands to the head shops. Ah look, Irelands becoming a fucking joke, its got to the stage where I have to shut myself away from the reality of the fucking kip! so leave the headshops alone ye’s fuckers! As the saying goes ” you don’t need drugs to live here..but it helps” I’ve had it with Ireland, like itchy said its an embrassment to be Irish

  23. Holemaster says:

    So true Crank.

  24. Fatmammycat says:

Now if Joe can just get them to ban tattoo parlours as well…

  25. Conan Drumm says:

That’s it, Crank. I walked past a pub at 3pm the other day with a miserable, stinking drunk having a smoke break outside. Across the road there was a picket of the righteously alarmed outside the ‘head’ shop. I’m sure the ironies didn’t even occur to them.

I’d like to get thousands of embossed steel signs saying “SELL ALCOHOL SENSIBLY” and stick one up the hole of every publican in the country.

  26. Fatmammycat says:

“I don’t want to sound like a killjoy….I freely admit i’ve used recreational drugs in the past…but these “legal highs” are just as dangerous as the real thing can potentially be.”

Do you have anything to back that statement up? Not being smart of anything but I would like to read the evidence that this is the case.

  27. The Other Ron says:

@Fatmammycat – seconded. I’d like to see the evidence that backs up the claim that legal highs are “just as dangerous” as PCP and Crack.

Any evidence at all would be welcome.

  28. Fatmammycat says:

Hell’s bells, Other Ron, even if they were as ‘dangerous’ as cigarettes I’d be interested.

  29. Jenny says:

sick, paronoid and awake for two days…terrible stuff!

  30. Conan Drumm says:

It brings to mind the whole Methylated Spirits thing. Some folks used to drink it, but you’re not meant to drink it so it was made a controlled substance. You could buy it in small quantities from a chemist and he put your name in a big old-fashioned ledger. They still do, I think. And I don’t believe its legal status has changed but the last time I needed some I bought a 3litre bottle of it in a hardware shop, no questions asked. But don’t tell the publicans, they’ll think the hardware trade are cutting in on their action.

  31. itchybollix says:

very well put crank. I’ll try and explain the logic to my 2 local FF TD fuckwits. On the other hand I think I’ll just get wasted, it’ll be more productive.

  32. razzer says:

theres a huge porportion of the locals arround me spend there days going from pub to bookies and back. ive yet to see anyone burning down ladbrokes/betfair/paddy power etc. these fuckers rape the poor far more effectively than any dealer has ever managed to do..

  33. rapemachine says:

to be fair those legal pills are awful. they leave you fucked for days, way worse than regular pills. a lot of dealers stopped bothering with proper pills because they were being undercut by the legal shite, in fact, i ended up getting legal shite from a proper dealer (through a friend, no come back) last year and it nearly ruined my electric picnic..

so in short, these head shops closing shoudl flood the market with proper drugs again. well done the government.

  34. shly dog says:

It’s quite common for homeless people in the US to get fucked up by drinking bottles of cheap, brand x mouthwash, which obviously destroys their insides…I reckon the Irish government’s next logical move is to ban evil mouthwash. To save the children, like.

  35. Sir-Dancealot-The-Rave says:

LOL – boards is as boring as hell anyway I never look at it…

  36. Tim says:

As a non drinker I can tell you that legal high drugs do indeed suck. Luckily, my dealer still has “smack” and “coke”. A plentiful tide in fact, that the stupid govt can’t seem to stem, despite their policey policy. Let them have their silly rules. But I’ll tell you one thing. I’m never touching that crap drug alcohol ever again.
