New speed limits in Dublin

Posted on | February 1, 2010 | 31 Comments

So it’s 30 kmh for anyone that wants to drive through the city centre. This is, in real speed, 18 mph. Which is very slow.

The AA point out the average speed in Dublin city centre is 11 kmh anyway so what’s the point? It’s supposedly to save lives. I’d like to see some stats on how many people are killed in car accidents in the city centre and how many pedestrians are knocked down by cars in the city centre.

Then I’d like to see stats on those pedestrian accidents. How many of them came from a car going through pedestrian crossings? Then how many of them came from people crossing from behind parked cars or buses? How many came from people trying to scurry across the road instead of waiting 20 seconds for the lights? How many of them were down to pedestrians not taking proper care when crossing the road?

I’d suggest most of them are due to pedestrian error. Yet our answer is to shift the responsibility from them to the drivers. How does that work? Why aren’t councillors campaiging for better pedestrian crossings? For Green Cross Code courses?

Personally, I’m going to pay no heed to the new speed limits and if I happen to run a jaywalker over it’s entirely their fault.

*Note to self : Get those fake numberplates made up.

I’m glad I bloody walk everywhere. Being a driver is like being a criminal in this country. No wait, criminals get more respect.

Hear hear! Dublin’s pedestrian crossings appear to have been designed by someone who’d seen pedestrian crossings before, but had never actually worked out the principles behind them, and that sure as long as the lights change colour now and again it’s working.

I hate that they seem to pluck these arbitrary decisions out of the sky. 30kmh, even on wide streets? at 3 am? balls.

It is your civic duty to mow down jaywalkers – the less criminals Ireland has the better!

I just wish there could be some flair in all this rule making. Some innovation, some vision.

Come on. Hit us with something imaginative and world changing and prodctive and new.

    Not city centre speed limits.

    Sigh.

I thought it was about cyclists, not pedestrians. But then I am a little egocentric.

our answer is to shift the responsibility from them to the drivers.

As if drivers bear no responsibility. A growing minority of people drive like cunts. The light’s not red until it’s been red for 5 seconds. Indicating is optional. Cyclist can go and shite because I need to be at the next red light sooner than the cunt in the lane beside me.

The law is pointless because no one is going to pay any fucking attention to it not because it wouldn’t save lives if they did.

Cyclists are self-righteous cunts – ride pavements, go down one way streets the wrong way, abuse pedestrian crossings, abuse traffic light procedures – they are fair game, should be a bounty on them! On a nore serious note, they certainly should have to pay road tax and be made to have insurance!

Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
    Average speed: 49-65 kmph/35-40 mph.

The Celtic Tiger (Panthera Maximus Failuris)
    Average speed: 11 kmhh/18 mph.

    And this, quoted from Wiki..

‘..they are territorial and generally solitary animals, often requiring large contiguous areas of habitat: coupled with the fact that they are endemic to some of the more densely populated places on earth: has caused significant conflict: the primary direct causes are habitat destruction and fragmentation: habitat destruction and inbreeding depression continue to threaten the species..’

    I didn’t say that.

A growing minority of people drive like cunts.

A lot of cyclists cycle like cunts. I used to cycle across town a lot, some car drivers were ignorant cunts back then, but they’re ignorant cunts to cyclists, pedestrians and other drivers because they’re ignorant cunts in general.

Those who dress in dark clothes and go out for a little spin on the unlit rothar at night deserve everything they get.

It’s amazing how many of them there are around.

And the cycling cunts who flock together in Lycra and expect the roads to be theirs – the number of times I’ve been late for Church because these wankers are clogging up the roads in their dozens.

Gimmeaminute, indicators are optional. That why they’re called indicators; they indicate an intention which can be an unintentional indication.

Jesus; I should have studied law too.

The speed limit is comical; just another example of the lunatics running the asylum.

Well, at least if they are changing speed limits, it means they are clearly too busy to supply water to the city (not a priority). Lunatics is right.

Councils and government change by-laws and increasingly introduce annoying legislation that costs fuck all when they have no money to make a real difference in any other sector.

Expect a lot more of the same in the next few years.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians complaining about each other

    *yawn*

When i’m driving I act and think like a driver, when i’m cycling i act and think like a cyclist,
when i’m walking i act and think like a pedestrian…

I’d say most people are the same.

Vehicle tax, same difference. The cunts should have to pay for the roads they clutter up. And compulsory insurance.

The perfect speed is 266 mph. It’s a little scary getting there but once you achieve it, it is perfectly safe. You won’t knock anyone down or crash into anything. It is the optimum speed for progressing in perfect harmony with all other road users. Try it, you’ll be amazed.
