Sad sign of the times

Starbucks has reported its profits have tripled. I had hoped the recession would wake people up to the fact that Starbucks is to coffee what Willie O’Dea is to not being a noxious little bollix. Sadly people seem quite content to waste their money on the foul muck they try and pass off as coffee.

Buy one of these, some good coffee (beans or ground) and never darken a Starbucks door again. You’ll thank me.

Along with chewing gum, poetry and RTE presenters who wear silly hats, Starbucks would be totally outlawed under my regime.

  1. Its nickname is fourbucks for a reason.

David McSavage and Willie O’Dea loves starbucks.

  2. Jo says:

    loves it?

Have they fused into one entity? What a scary thought.

I don’t care about this one, Twenty. Well I do. But I like their frappes. And I go there a couple times a year. And I can’t live without coffee unless I have to work all night.

  6. Twenty Major says:

There was a McDonalds in Ranelagh?

Of couse Ranelagh has never been the same since Jason’s closed down.

  7. Twenty Major says:

Jo – I can’t live without coffee. No gremlins

  8. Magoo says:

I have one of those things and I hate drinking coffee out because it’s always crap; costa coffe is shite too. Though ciao bella roma do a lovely coffee.

  9. Twenty Major says:

    What coffee do you use?

  10. Sorry Ms. Jo!

    …love starbucks.

A grinder and a french press is all you need for a good coffee.

  11. peadar says:

coffee is for cunts. Real men drink tae

  12. Magoo says:

I use lavazza coffee. Yours is a lot less coffee splashed than mine, I feel ashamed.

  13. Twenty Major says:

That’s not actually mine. I just found the picture.

    Try this coffee:

Was told to lay off it, none for eight days now. I miss it. Have never darkened the door of a Starbucks.

I was in London to enjoy the uproar when McDonalds wanted to open in Hampstead!

Will September 19th be outlawed under the new regime?

    Yaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrr!

  17. Magoo says:

I love Illy coffee but it’s twice the price.Might try it again and see if it’s worth the difference.
This is the stuff I use, it’s luvly.

  18. Twenty Major says:

    How come, Radge?

Magoo – I use that stuff for the French press, not the espresso pot.

  19. papalamour says:

It might not come in a pretty package.. but the espresso and filter coffee in Lidl is pretty decent and half the price…its next to the Skag and Jeremy Kyle Annuals near the front…I’m not proud! Good, strong fresh coffee with frothy milk is a necessary daytime addiction. I have a stockpile in readiness for 2012.

  20. Coffee news is filtering its way down to the masses.

  21. maggot says:

OK Twenty – FatSparrow is interested, make your move!

  22. Mike says:

I have what seems to be a coffee pot (it’s in the press since I moved in), I haven’t a clue how to use it. I’m that much of a culchie. Now I live in Dublin where ye just leave the fecking things lying around the place…

  23. Twenty Major says:

It’s probably full of cocaine that the previous owner didn’t want.

  24. Mike says:

Shite, I thought it was Daz. No wonder I did a day’s work before 11 and couldn’t feel me bollix.

  25. DD says:

    Jasons closed down?

  26. Andrew says:

Agreed. On the true loathsomeness of Starbucks and the loveliness of Illy.
    Um…that’s it really.

  27. Twenty Major says:

Jason’s closed years ago. I spent many a late night in there.

    Illy is fantastic.

  28. DD says:

Ranelagh started going to shit when Gordons Hardware Store became Centra.

That McDonalds they opened was completely
non-smoking which was very unusual at the time. There was a right fuss about it – seems ridiculous now.

Then they knocked the jacks down and the ‘triangle’ was never to be the same again.

Illy’s IS fantastic. Also Caffe L’affaire Organic blend. Mmmmm.

Jason’s – great place to bump into all the insomniac “overseas” students you didn’t really know from school. I recall the metallic smell of coins lingering on my blackened fingers for days afterwards.

    Simpler times.

  35. manuel says:

i had one of those jobbies…fucking thing exploded one night and nearly took my head off….i stick to tea now,,,,lovely tea

  36. Butch Cavendish says:

“I was in London to enjoy the uproar when McDonalds wanted to open in Hampstead!”

They DID open in the end (you just can’t stop them), but they weren’t allowed the traditional Macca’s signs – they had to go with a discreet brass sign and preserve the architecture of the building they were in to be in keeping with the area.

This should be the rule for every fast food chain joint, everywhere.

  37. Filthy says:

I remember my parents having one of those pots, way back in the Eighties. I always assumed it was for when we had midgets over for tea, which, sadly, was less often than I would have liked. I’m glad I now realise what it is for! Where can I get one? Apart from midget tea-pot shops.

twenty. Just in case you need to know for technical reasons – I posted 2 comments which didn’t appear. They weren’t important. Just who shot JFK and what Mary Harney has for breakfast.

That’s been happening to me of late.

Ian Paisley jnr still spouting sectarian nonsense on Hearts and Minds. He’s “worried” about the “de-protestantisation” of the prison service. YAWN. I thought that bollix was in the past. fucks sake.

  44. itchybollix says:

WOW. What an amazing dysfunctional prison system. 60% of prison time is taken up by people who haven’t paid fines. 2,000 people per year.

On second thoughts. What an amazingly weird mentality. Pay a fine? Nope. I’d rather go to prison

  45. itchybollix says:

Sorry twenty. Ever since I got banned by politics.ie I’m putting all my shit on you. *blubber

  46. maggot says:

Serves you right for listening to Hearts and Minds – and bear in mind that there may be a leadership contest in the DUP and SF soon. Ian Jnr is playing to party hardliners. Paddy Power was reported as having Mary Lou favourite to displace Gerry!

  47. itchybollix says:

good point maggot. I never thought about the DUP leadership angle. Mary Lou is wetter than the wettest thing I’ve ever encountered.* That bet is a lay.

*including the wishy-washy in SPANKY’S club next door to The Ministry of Sound in Bangkok.

  48. maggot says:

Ian Jnr is like Prince Charles – frustrated not have succeeded the parent! He’s an odd one – saw him on a program talking about CS Lewis, came across as interesting and intelligent.

Did you know you can download Paisley Snr sermons as mp3 ?

  49. itchybollix says:

Ian jnr came across as a sectarian bigot to me. His dad was kind of a little too extreme too for my leanings. I’m more of the peace and love type with a nice grasp of reality and no fire and brimstone cockology.

I’ve just had a thought of Mary Harneys snatch for some reason. Christ. Something to do with those mp3s

Then they all broke their bollix laughing. parishiltondotcom; I can sell that for .0000004 cent?

  56. Getting back to the original theme, there is one other aspect to my distaste for Starbucks. Quite simply, coffee should be drunk from a ceramic cup or mug. Plastic and paper coffee cups are for cunts. That is all.

If you’re willing to spend a little extra (up around Illy price after P&P) for coffee, I recommend

    http://www.hasbean.co.uk

The variety is great, loads of info on each type and you can get your coffee as green beans, roasted beans or ground.

Delivery is only a few days to Ireland.

    Check out the site.

  59. SuperGrover says:

And, yes, Starbucks is gick. For anyone who likes their coffee, I have 6 kilos of their ESTIMA BLEND beans free to collect. Expiry date is Oct 09 but it would be grand for another few months at least. Nth Co Dublin to collect.

  65. SuperGrover says:

“Jard to beat Maxwell house with a pinch of cinnamon”

    Ach, Jaysus, WTF?

“though proper Turkish coffee comes close”

Haven’t been to Turkey. I’ll give it a go if I get there some day.

  66. I agree with you entirely save for the bit about poetry…..

I adore my Bialetti (6 cup pot = two decent mugs of espresso). I use Lavazza generally, though Illy is good too….

We are also fortunate, here, in that we have an Italian grocery nearby where we can get lovely biscuits to go along with the coffee….

  67. maggot says:

I’ve never been to Turkey SG but have Turkish friends who prepare it – and it can be got in Turkish restaurants. Made in a Cezve. Not difficult to buy in our Islands ( being diplomatic! )

  68. SuperGrover says:

Oh aye, I’ll try to find a sup of it in Dublin. Ta.

  69. grapeape says:

i get coffee from the guy in Georges Arcade, fresh beans. there is a french roast which is super, or for something more hard core he has cuban beans that will totally rewire your skull. just the thing for a mellow sunday brew

  70. Butch Cavendish says:

I’ve never tried it myself, but you can order coffee beans from the Island of St. Helena Coffee Company, where Napoleon Bonaparte spent the latter part of his life, and it is supposed to be one of the finest coffees in the world. A snip at US$79 a pound.

  71. Hank Scorpio says:

Blue Mountain Coffee from somewhere in the carribean is quite delicious too. I am a big fan of Illy but it is very expensive. Lavazza is your only man. The Bialletti 9 cup is quality for mug of coffee. Put one large heaped scoop into the filter(press down with a small pressing device purchased in Starbucks for 4 euro (No I didnt buy a coffee:))) and fill the water to the line. Its like non alcoholic Guinness.
