Violent bastards

This climate change conference over in Copenhagen, a load of hot air if you ask me, but then you didn’t and nobody does which is probably for the best.
However, as usual with these kinds of events, there are images transmitted around the world of conflict between the police and demonstrators/campaigners/protesters, or whatever you want to call them. It doesn’t matter where these events are held, there are always batons cracking skulls, tear gas and fights between the ‘Save the planet! Down with capitalism!’ unwashed masses in their Nikes, and the police.
What is the common denominator? The police are different in every place, yet I suspect the core group of protesters remains fairly constant.
Why are these people so hellbent on violence? They’re supposed to be peaceful activists, no? These Green Party members/sympathisers from all over the world get involved time and time again in riots and skirmishes. At what point do they stop being classed as protesters and instead labelled violent, organised thugs?

Pretty disappointing stuff Twenty. The protest WAS peaceful until the police got involved. And you are right in saying this always happens at these summits but you have to ask why that is. I’m not saying I know, but I would suspect the major players involved want a crack down on any protests and try to discredit them in the process.

It might be that peaceful protests don’t get the same media coverage as the violent ones. I for one am glad to see a few people are willing to stick their neck out for what they believe in, even if they do keep getting battered. I suppose they could just blog/comment about it like the rest of us ;)
We could do with some galvanised protesters in this country who would take to the streets against NAMA, clerical abuse etc on a sustained basis. The last time I think there was anything like a united show of force by the people here was the big anti Iraq War march (which I know was completely ignored!).
I dunno, I guess it’s our physical apathy that leads to a lack of protests and FF repeatedly getting voted in.
PS The inevitible industrial action next year by the public sector doesn’t count. They’re about money not ideals!

The problem is that very often these protests are hijacked by a small minority of troublemakers. The ensuing scuffle is often blown out of proportion by the media.

Remember the poll tax protests in London , now that was a riot . Truly memorable . It kicked off at the start when a protester cut a rectangular lump of sod off a grassy area and put it on top of old winston churchill’s head giving him a green mohican . The po-po seemed to take offense and moved in and the rest is history.

I know that some of the comments are meant in jest and all that, but you can’t describe the thousands of people who protested as “hippies.” There’s a huge number of people there and not all of them have a dog on a rope and a levellers t-shirt! Unfortunately the protesters aren’t a big organised group that send memos and decide what the plans are. They are disjointed groups, all protesting for their own principles and often quite different from one another.
Some of them certainly are dole bludging hippies who are angry at the world for not providing them with a sweet and easy life without their having to lift a dirty, snot encrusted finger to earn it.
Many are genuinely well intentioned people with real values and good ideas but again, they are unorganised and are fighting against corporate power and are destined to fail.
Many are just lads who have a penchant for the beauty of a hairy female armpit for some who fucking knows what reason and are just playing the hippie to try to get their hole.
The one thing they all have in common is that they are totally and utterly naive if they think they will accomplish anything other than giving the baton swingers a workout.
