Apropos the Black Bull’s ability to spend, spend, spend, and Ms. Harney’s blithe quote that the country was awash with money, she may not be wrong. As the first anniversary of the bank guarantee passed us some weeks ago the media told us that the guarantee was valued at 261% of Ireland’s GDP. I checked the sums on this and our GDP for 2008 was €181 billion (€189 billion in 2007). Now if you multiply 181 x 2.61 you come up with a mind boggling €472 billion! That’s the amount on deposit in Irish banks that we as taxpayers guaranteed. Now where the fuck is all that money gone and how in Christ’s name can we get hold of a slice of it? That amount would fund NAMA nine times over.

No sooner had the South Kerry TD resigned to the Fianna Fail backbenches than the warning shots were fired. His cousin and Fianna Fail Councillor Michael O’Shea leading the charge.

“Any Fianna Fail candidate who tries to oppose John O’Donoghue or to put his name forward at the next election would be a very foolish politician.

“I can guarantee you this, that at the next election, John is looking at a massive vote. He will get enormous support. The O’Donoghue campaign will be fought with fierce vigour and fire.”
