Controversial former Fas boss Rody Molloy had his pension boosted by an estimated €1.4m after the intervention of two senior government ministers, who are this weekend blaming each other over the affair.
Molloy, who presided over an incredible culture of waste at the €1bn-a-year state agency, has now, as a result of the intervention, a total pension worth more than €4m.

Reading the article, this is a bit like the prisoner’s dilemma in reverse – they both blame each other (correctly, too, as it couldn’t have happened without both of theirs say-so), but will both get away without having to answer for their own part in it. Shared accountability is no accountability and all that.
What must be comforting for them both is the knowledge that, if they keep their heads down and weather this storm for the next 3/4 days, another scandal involving Fás/developers/bankers/expenses/etc will undoubtedly blow up, and we’ll all be outraged over that and have forgotten about this.
As an electorate, if we had a collective political memory longer than that of a brain-damaged goldfish living in a bowl of vodka, our elected representatives would have to be far more concerned about being punished for these sort of shady dealings. As it is, I’d imagine that this story won’t even be mentioned again after a week or so.

We’re inherently corrupt. The worse thing to happen us was Catholicism. The Protestant work ethic is much less likely to facilitate corruption. The Catholic church became all powerful here and controlled the State more than the Government did. The Unionists in the North always pointed it out as the main reason for not joining the Republic, probably more of a factor than loyalty to the British Crown.

FAS has always been a con but became the mother of all cons during the Celtic Tiger with the total collaboration of Fianna Fail.
Those so-called educational science trips to Nasa were another massive junketfest. By all accounts a 4-year-old could have answered the questions posed at the end of the trip. Another total waste of taxpayers money.
