Eircom are fucking pussies

Posted on | August 20, 2009 | 53 Comments

So after pressure from record companies such as EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warners (no doubt K-Tel and Ronco are in there too), Eircom will block access to the Pirate Bay from September 1st.

However, other ISPs are not following suit. BT say “there is no legal basis for such a request” while UPC say “UPC has informed the rightsholders that there is no basis under Irish law requiring an ISP to block access to certain websites and that it will not agree to a request that goes beyond what is currently provided for under Irish law”

So why are Eircom buckling under the pressure? It’s because they are fucking pussies, that’s why.

And fuck EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warners for continuing to miss the point completely. Perhaps if they worked as hard at providing a ‘cure’ for the problem of illegal downloading instead of misguidedly trying to prevent it they’d be better off, consumers would be better off and the artists would be better off. When music is easy to buy online, as iTunes Music Store has shown, then people will buy online.

It’s unbelievable how short-sighted they are. They killed off Napster, up came AudioGalaxy, they killed off that, up popped Torrents and sites dedicated to music Torrents and while one of them, Oink, famously got busted many others thrive. I doubt there’s an album released (or some unreleased) that isn’t available within a few seconds of searching if you know where to look. Yet the record companies are still trying to shut the stable door long after the horse has bolted.

And Eircom – they have decided that pressure from lobby groups is enough for them to dictate what people can and cannot look at on their network. What’s to stop someone pressure group, we’ll call them CRAP (Christians Rail Against Pornography), bullying Eircom into blocking access to sites with boobs on them? Will Eircom stop access to sites like Rapidshare or YouSendIt which are used to share music, films, programs and much more – but which also have very many legitimate uses? Where does it stop and who decides what’s acceptable? It seems that if you shout loudly enough at them they’ll do what you want if it makes you go away.

Eircom have set a dangerous precedent here. They’ve shown they’re essentially spineless, there’s no basis in Irish law for what they’ve done but they’ve done it anyway. If I were an Eircom broadband customer I’d be cancelling this morning and signing up somewhere else.

Im just shocked that anyone would feel threatened by such a corrupt and innafectual organisation as IMRO,seeing as they are just the attack dogs for the Major labels and do sweet fuck all for actual recording and performing artists and musicians in this country..

Spineless morons, As if it is not child’s play to get around but the point of censorship of the internet is the most important point here.

It all goes back to price-fixing in the music business, which has been a massive corporate rip-off since the CD became the retail standard and chainstores like Virgin, HMV and Tower signed up to it.
Even the book-publishing business had to give up price-fixing practices, because the retailers showed some balls.
ISPs will become legit music/film distributors, for a slice of the action, in cahoots with the majors. Eircom is positioning itself to ‘partner’ with the likes of Sony. That’s how I read it.

That seems like a reasonable explanation, Conan. They’re still fucking pussies though.

Torrents have as many legal uses, and huge advantages over other methods of downloading, don’t forget.

And Pirate Bay is going legal next week, so it’s all a bit silly really, isn’t it?

I had to laugh this morning when I saw something about this in one of the freesheets. They named a few ‘artists’ who were outspoken about Pirate Bay. Among them were Madonna, Metallica (I think), and Aslan.
They printed a moody-looking pic of Aslan.

    Fuckin’ Aslan!
    You couldn’t give them away.

@Conan Drumm, there is no way the big boys are going to share with Eircom, this has been discussed and they have no intentions of letting ISP’s have a slice of the cake.

Agreed… but it won’t be long before Sony starts buying nice compliant ISPs like Eircom whose shareholders want a pay-day.

Guess how many Aslan albums (or tracks even) are listed on Pirate Bay?

    Go on, guess?

I have Eircom broadband in work and I don’t want to but here’s the problem. The lines are owned by Eircom so if I use a different provider who’s leasing the line from Eircom, I still depend on the fuckers anyway. Wireless boardband is not fast enough or reliable enough. I also get the mobiles and phones from Eircom in one package and it’s cheap.

I can always write them a stinker of a letter though.

I found one Aslan torrent on a site I use. It’s some new album where they do covers including Jealous Guy, Maggie May and Nothing Rhymed.

It appears a grand total of two downloads have been made

Saw Vodafone doing some €25 for all your calls thing, get UPC broadband, get a VOIP thingy going for your phones, then fuck Eircom out the window.

If it is there then their score on Pirate Bay leaps to a massive ONE track. (2x½)

Poor Christy, he’ll have to bring out the Greatest Hits again this Christmas. Let’s see now, they’ve done ‘Greatest Hits’, and I think they’ve already done ‘Best Of…’ as well. Any suggestions as to ought to call it this time?

So if you have an account with Spotify for example, and you use AudioGrab or whatever to download the stuff you want, doesn’t that add up to the same deal? If there’s a fix, a tool or reach-around to get what you want anyway, then Pirate Bay are getting punished further by merely being open in their policy, right?

Still, it’s a bit rich to have Aslan complain when the last twenty years of their ‘career’ has been greatest hits, ‘last ever’ tours of the bogs, best of’s, one-off’s down the Janelle shopping centre carpark and covers of golden oldies. But I guess any press is good press..even a trouser press.

Wonder if they know every shite record they ever made is up on Spotify? Only in Dublin could an illiterate shoeless crack addict knacker become a working class hero. Aaaaah Jublin! Worra chown!

eircom are pussies because the shower of bastards who own them are trying to flog’em off to some sucker.

and because of this, they don’t want any legal cases against them, while this sale is ongoing…

so, to sum up, as twenty explained, ergo, they are pussies.

They don’t have to balls to tell IRMA and DickCabeza Doyle to fuck off.

I still reserve judgement to call UPC the same…

Well, perhaps seeing as Piratebay are going the way of Napster and Audiogalaxy, then it’s a token effort from Eircom, and one that will not affect most users seeing as they’ll move on to the next torrent provider anyway.. In my opinion, a clever move from eircom…

Right now (01 Sep 09 12:30 AM) Pirate Bay is still available via Eircom.

I think it’s actually a smart move. Pirate Bay are going the way of the dodo by natural selection anyway.

And Eircom are soon selling out to some Singaporean shower, leave them to deal with the hate and also avoid any tedious legal bullshit.

But, yes they are milquetoast pussies…

It is a proper joke, its Censoring the internet, Controlling what was designed to be Free. TorrentFreak pointed out that there in breach of EU law as censoring online sites that arent actuallly illegal is stoping our free will online.
But Eircom are just theiving scumbags, all ways have been and now the figure we’l keep the IRMA happy, sure our users are all still living in the 80s and dont know/care about new media like Torrents.
I dont think they realise that there are thousands of other torrent sites available out there.
Ok this wasnt a very structured rant at all, but guys i think its time for some direct action, maybe someone set up a site where we can add our name to a petition and send a letter to eircom expressing our disgust, or start smashing eircom windows and phone booths!
