Road Records benefit

Posted on | March 7, 2009 | 35 Comments

If I could get back all the time in my life that I spent in record shops I’d be 21 again.

So it’s not nice to see your humble record shopkeep struggle. The Hangar Queen has details of a benefit gig set up to help Road Records on Fade Street.

If you’re a vinyl junkie, or even a CD junkie, or an 8-track junkie (they do 8-track carts, right?) check it out. Every bit helps.

Off topic, I had a Cavan girl in the cab, really upset because she left her “brilliant” book in the pub, when I asked what she was reading she said; Twenty Major, ‘Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder, I automatically assumed she was a blogger or blog reader but no! she bought the first book as the cover intrigued her and loved it, so much so that she ran out to buy the second, was really enjoying it also and WILL buy a replacement.
She was verging on hero worship!

On topic, Worked in a record shop for 2 years, have played my part in their demise……guilt? I’ll get back to you
Big fan of Hanger queen and fair play to you for linking to her, fantastic reading about her rebuilding!

Shit that was a long comment!

    heh, cool story Roy. Cheers.

Weird thing last night. Got a cab going into town at about 9pm, was in town having some drinks, walked out of the bar around 1.30am, hailed the first cab coming down the street and it was the exact same bloke.

Twenty speaks of cab driver coincidence, but it’s all a front. In reality, he just has a really discreet chauffeur.

Oh, you fogeys with your vinyl and cds and record shops! I’m quite jealous of the sense of community that used to be tied up with buying music. Me, I might be moved to protest if they tried to close my local branch of eMule. Le sigh.

Is he gone now? Is it safe??? heh..

Great shop and a great night out.I believe Road can weather the current climate,I think when they announced that they were closing,an awful lot of people got a bit of a wake up call.I would love to say that I went there all the time, but not being in Dublin its a bit of a trek.I will certainly stick my head in next time i’m in Dubland..

There are also other Independent record shops in town that should be supported too.. City Disc’s,Beatfinder etc.. They have supplied me with many, many good music over the years and id hate to see them go too..

It is,what sops in England have done, successfully,is change the way they deal with their customers, also alot of them have introduced say a coffee shop, have free wi-fi,cater to niche music buyers and vinyl junkies, you only have to look at the success of Plugd in cork. They know their customers and they cater to them, also by not being eliteist, snobby or clickey (this puts alot of potential customers off too)they have alot of casual but repeat business.Road was always a welcoming shop, whereas the firast time I went into Abbey (years ago) i found it quite intimidating,so i didnt go back for a long time.I did eventually and was glad i did,but i think shop owners have to be as helpful to all customers coming in..All the shops I have frequently bought music from were staffed by people that know their stuff but dont rub it in to a novice coming in for the first time..

“Cunt” is the most devalued word in your narrow vocabulary. Think of something original or just block my IP. LOL

I’m not racist but is Road Records trouble a bit Bewley’s in that it’s a case of falling sales and simply unavoidable? I don’t want to see them go but charity is not going to keep them in business long term.

    March 8th, 2009 @ 9:39 pm

I’m not a racist, but i hope that it isnt charity and people start realising that specialist shops add character to the city and are vital,so if it cost a couple of quid extra for that album than in the chain store, that they’ll spend their money there,Kind of like its better to buy meat from a butcher shop than in a supermarket…

Maybe it might help them set up some kind of online/mail order service which I think they’ll have to do if they want to survive.

That would be the best chance they have. It would allow them keep the shop going. Putting ‘Hi-Fidelity’ on the junior cert would also help.
