The ole fella in the ad reminds me of an older man who used to own a shop down the road. He used to call us rapscallions and whipper snappers.
I fucking hated the dithery old cunt.

Bill Golding’s the man, God bless him. I haven’t been in the Savoy for years, but his voice used to do the intro before the films, the bit about fastening your seatbelt and the oxygen mask etc. Still at it too. Not fnarr at it, just working.

  3. you are gonna hate me for this but,,,

I remember hearing that being played over the stereo system in the Students union room in Kevin Street College some twenty years ago.

Bill Golding. Did he play Rory in Wanderly Wagon?

No. He was ‘Judge’, who went on to join GlaxoSmithKline and died of a smoking related disease.

I remember the obituary in Equity. ‘Gone, But Not Doggone’ I think it said.

Pat from Pats Hat is a good cheerful chucklous writer. I buy his books and stop by for a chat on O’Rommell Street bridge when I’m in Dub. You should say hello- he’s a decent stick and his books are worth the bobs.

The old biddy was Mother somebody. ‘Fucker’ possibly. But I’m not sure.

One of the happiest days of my childhood was one Saturday morning my dad,who worked in RTE,asked me did i want to come into work with him.I was delighted ans we set off on the way into montrose.

He called briefly into the office and then said “C’mon and we’ll go up to the studio building and i’ll show you around”.

We got up to the door and he said “I think there’s a programme being made at the moment, lets go in”.

So we went into the studio and there in front of me was THE Wanderly Wagon, with Judge,Slithery Snake and the rest of them filming an episode… Class!
3 of the happiest hours i ever spent and then i got to meet them all…

Was it a whole wagon? Because I was there once and I saw just a side of a wagon leaning against a wall. I was gutted.

I have been told since there was a real one, but too little, too late.

I have a whole tape of out takes from Irish radio ads from the 80s. I think Frank Kelly voiced a lot of them.

I have no idea how to convert it to mp3 though.

Some of them are hilarious though.

Auld Mister Brennan will live forever.

OftR – I know how to do it but I don’t think I even have a cassette player anymore.

I used to do a similar bit of shtick around the Ronnie Drew, My Dublin spots for the lads.

I couldn’t do it now, of course. It’d be the height of bad taste, what with 98FM STILL on the air after 20 years of continuous utter fucking drivel.

OneForTheRoad, does that tape have the “F**k on a Foxford” and “Tetra Delta – it’s great for them white spots on yer mickey” ads on it? I had a copy of a similar tape years ago – there were a few US ads on it too. (Something about orange juice I think.) Friggin’ hilarious stuff at the time.

    Hiya Tony,

Re Kevin St – I think it was nearer 25 years ago – played by one-armed Marty in the shop….I was there playing pool at the time…….in fact, come to think of it, I’d say I was there all the feckin time….

If anyone still has that tape (1ftr), it can be arranged to get it converted to mp3 very easily…Frank Kelly had a starring role if I recall.
    Great site btw 20Major!!
