I couldn’t agree more. Of all the countries in the UK (plus the extra bit underneath the part of Ireland we stole), you’re the only one that actually has a holiday for your national saint. And you’re the least likely to need an excuse to get wankered. OK, the Scots are the same. Mind, they get 2 days’ public holiday at New Year.

I think Paddy’s day is more an excuse for Aussies and Yanks to pretend they’re Irish (or drag up the fact that one of their relatives 18 generations ago died from lack of potatoes and that they hate the English) and go out and get pissed.

Judging by the numbers of ‘drinkers’ on the town last night I wouldn’t be surprized if a few more publicans up and down the country are gone out of business by this time next year.
