I'd say PETA are a poor example of a group sticking up for a belief purely because they have been linked to animal rights extremists and have allegedly provided some financial support to these extremists. So with PETA the argument turns into an "ends justifies the means" situation, which can get very dodgy depending on the ends and the means. That being said; regarding your original post it depends on how one stands up for one’s beliefs.
