Jail a pensioner week

Hey, Irish Government, I have an idea.
Let’s find a 76 year old woman who can’t afford to pay a €200 euro fine for not having a dog licence and let’s, for the laugh, chuck her in jail for a week.
At the same time let’s find a number of men every week who download and distribute child pornography and, this is where it’ll be really funny, let’s just fine them a meaningless amount of money and let them stay out of prison to continue downloading, wanking to and sending on this kind of filth.
What do you think? You like the idea! Great.

Equally as ridiculous - catching a 14 year old driving a stolen van and banning him from driving for 3 years. Erm… the fact that’s under 17 and has no license should be banning him from driving. It’s like banning me from lactating.
Why not ban him for 3 years *starting from his 17th birthday*?

A PENSIONER may be jailed today for non-payment of a fine for failing to possess a dog licence.
The Limerick city woman, who is in her 70s, is due to present herself at Henry Street Garda Station this afternoon for jailing.
She was fined €200 in the district court last May with five days in prison if she didn’t pay the fine.
The woman, however, has refused to pay the fine and has left the authorities with no alternative but to execute the warrant.
Garda sources in the city last night confirmed they were aware of the woman’s decision and said they had no alternative but to uphold the law.
“A situation such as this is not ‘a la carte’ in that we cannot pick and choose from a menu of options,” said a garda source.
“The system is there and the law must be upheld for each and every citizen in the State and that’s the reality we are faced with.”
The Irish Independent has learned that the woman’s family had offered to pay the fine but she has vigorously rejected this option.

Other report say she can’t afford the fine, as opposed to simply refusing to pay it, and apparently she only started looking after the dog when its elderly owner died.
